June 2010 EDINBORO TRIATHLON The tradition continues! Saturday June 5, 2010 Start time: 9 AM Another milestone event...Edinboro’s 24nd triathlon. The following information for all entrants (and spectators) will be helpful to insure that everyone has a safe, great triathlon experience. Please read carefully. 1. RACE BAGS (for those whose race application is received/processed by Thursday June 3rd) can be picked up at the following times and locations: · Friday, June 4, at Charlie’s Pub & Eatery, located in the Sunset Plaza on Route 99, north of Edinboro, 5:00 - 8:00 PM. - or - · Saturday, June 5, race day, at the main tent registration area, located near the transition area. 7 AM - 8:30 AM. 2. ALL TRIATHLON PARTICIPANTS are required to CHECK-IN ON RACE DAY, June 5 at the REGISTRATION SITE. This is includes those who may have picked up their race packets on Friday night. 3. RACE DAY CHECK-IN – PRE-REGISTERED ENTRANTS · All pre-registered athletes should check in @ the American Legion tent, located beside the main tent registration area. · Give your last and first name to the check-in official. At that time you will learn your race number and be directed from there. The check-in official will have a complete alphabetical listing of all entrants and their race number. · Each triathlon entrant is responsible for checking with the check-in race official to learn his/her race number. Knowing your race number will enable you to proceed most efficiently through the race day processing of entrants. 4. LATE REGISTRATION / DAY OF RACE APPLICATION (as space allows) · A limited number of race day applications may be taken depending on the number received prior to June 5. ET 2010 is limited to 400 total entrants. · If 400 applications are received in advance, this info will be posted @ that time on the website. · Entry fees on race day (as space allows): Traditional Distance Event - $60.00. Sprint Distance Event - $50.00. · Late registration / day of race application area is located in the main tent. 3. AFTER CHECKING-IN, all triathlon participants... this means all individual entrants and all relay team member entrants (swimmers, cyclists and runners) will: 1. be given their race packets (if they did not pick up Friday evening). 2. be given a ChampionChip and a velcro band. (*NOTE: Special chip/band instructions for Relay Team Entrant below *. 3. be directed go to the body marking area where they will have both arms and both legs marked with their race number. § CHAMPIONCHIP TIMING: How This Works / What Everyone Needs To Know. The Edinboro Triathlon will be timed by The Runner’s High using the ChampionChip Race Timing System. On race day, all entrants...individuals and all relay team entrants (swimmers, cyclists and runners)...will be issued a computer CHIP which will be attached to a small velcro band. This band must be worn on one ankle throughout the entire race. Special mats at each transition area (swim to bike, bike to run) and at the finish line will record transition times and finish times for each person wearing the chip. *NOTE: Relay Teams will receive 1 Chip and 1 velcro band. This 1 Chip / 1 band, is to be shared by the entire team, and will be handed-off to the next team member when each segment of the race is completed. All CHIPS...individuals and relay teams...must be returned to race officials at the finish line...no exceptions. There will be a charge of $35 for chips not returned. Participants who own their own chips in advance of June 5th will need to present their Champion CHIP number to the race official at the Runners High van located near the start/finish line so your information can be recorded. After the race, participants may purchase a CHIP from the Runner’s High for future use at other races, any place else in the world. § BIKE HELMETS...that meet or exceed accredited safety standards...ARE REQUIRED. § WATER TEMPERATURE... average for June 5th: low to mid-60’s. Water temperature as of Thursday June 3, 2010: 73
§ WET SUITS are optional. (It is strongly recommended that triathlon swimmers swim in their intended wetsuit prior to swimming the ET 2010.)
§ LEAD VEHICLE will lead the first triathlon cyclist and the first triathlon runner throughout the race.
§ TRAIL VEHICLE will follow the last cyclist and the last runner throughout the race. This vehicle will not pick up participants who drop out of the race, nor will it pick up broken-down bicycles.
§ SWEEP VEHICLE. At approximately 11 AM...as needed...an official sweep vehicle will be start out on the bike course to pick up, first, any bicyclists (and their bikes) who remain on the course. The sweep vehicle will then cover the run course to pick up any remaining runners. Any participants who are picked up by the sweep vehicle will be returned to the race site @ Crawford beach.
§ VOLUNTEERS! The Edinboro Triathlon is a total volunteer effort. Race volunteers are exactly that: volunteers giving of their own time on race day to help provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Volunteers are not paid. This includes those working at registration, on the beach, on boats, in the transition area as well as the fire police, radio operators, road marshals, those working the water stations...everyone. It is expected that all participants treat every volunteer with respect. Beyond that, offer your thanks for giving their time and for being there
§ SAINT VINCENT SPORTS MEDICINE will have a staffed medical tent on-site on race day located near the start/finish line. EMS services, staffed by volunteer fire departments, will also be present and strategically positioned on the course.
§ RADIO COMMUNICATION will be in place throughout the triathlon course thanks to volunteer fire police companies and to volunteers of the Radio Association of Erie.
§ TIME LIMITATIONS. The triathlon course will officially close at 1 PM. At that time triathlon volunteers are directed to leave their sites. The race committee reserves the right to remove any participant for reasons of health, safety or inappropriate behavior. See Trail Vehicle and Sweep Vehicle information above.
BIKE RACKS in TRANSITION AREA. Each entrant’s position on the bike racks in the Transition Area will be determined by his / her race number. All triathlon entrants are expected to respect everyone else’s space. Personal bike stands/racks are unacceptable and will not be permitted.
§ JOHN ADAMS CYCLING & FITNESS of Erie will be awarding a $250.00 gift certificate as the grand prize at the post-race awards presentation. Must be present to win.
§ PRE-RACE BIKE ADJUSTMENTS / REPAIRS are the responsibility of each entered athlete. No extra bike helmets, shoes, parts or bike adjustments/repairs will be available @ ET 2010. Do come prepared.
§ PARKING!!! Is permitted on the non-mailbox side of any street around the Lakeside area with some major exceptions: No parking will be permitted on Lakeside Drive near the Transition Area, as well as no parking on Cypress St. and no parking on Jefferson St. No parking will be permitted on any of these streets on race day. FURTHER, PLEASE DO NOT PARK on LAWNS or BLOCK DRIVEWAYS or MAILBOXES of RESIDENTS or BUSINESSES. It is most important that everyone abide by these parking rules to allow for emergency vehicle access to the race site and to all of the homes and residents within the Lakeside area . TO HELP INSURE THE FUTURE OF EDINBORO’S TRIATHLON, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT EVERYONE BE RESPECTFUL AND FOLLOW THESE PARKING REGULATIONS Additional parking is available at Edinboro Elementary School (west of the race site), at St. Augustine’s Church (Rt. 6N, south side near Angling Rd.) and the southern end of the Edinboro Mall (east of the race site). These parking lots are on and can be entered from Rt. 6N. EVERYONE’S COOPERATION WILL BE APPRECIATED. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: Lakeside Drive (entire length), which runs parallel to the lake from Rt. 6N to Peach St. is ONE-WAY (north)..
§ RACE RESULTS. Race results will be posted as available at the transition area throughout race morning. Complete race results (finish times, places, transition times) will be posted within the next day: www.runhigh.com
- AWARDS PRESENTATION. Will start at approximately 12:30 PM. Main tent area.
§ WEATHER. Should the weather, water or road conditions be unfavorable for the total swim, bike and run events to take place on June 5th, the decision will be made by race officials to shorten the distances, or to conduct a run-bike-run event or a run-bike event only. Should conditions warrant, this decision will be made and announced as soon as possible. Should this information be known in advance of race day morning...an announcement will be prominently posted on this website.

This information, in addition to what was included initially with the 2010 ET (on-line and printed) race application and on the websites, has been compiled to deal with commonly asked questions, concerns and specifics about Edinboro’s Triathlon . RACE DAY AGENDA: 2010 Edinboro Triathlon
7:00 - 8:30 AM
1. All triathlon entrants: check-in with the check-in race official at the registration tent.
2. You will then be given your race bag (if you did not pick it up the evening before).
3. Pick up your assigned ChampionChip / Velcro band.
4. Have both arms, both legs and left calf numbered with your race number by a race official.
5. Check to be sure your race numbers match, that you have the correct color swim cap and that all information is correct.
6. Place bike in your assigned area on the bike racks. Only triathlon participants and race officials will be permitted in the Transition Area. Families and/ or friends are not permitted in the Transition Area.
7. Race day entries will be accepted, as time and space allow, until the race is filled to a maximun of 400 total entries.

Attendance at pre-race meeting is mandatory for all entrants.

NOTE: Olympic Distance Relay Team Swimmers will be directed to start with the Olympic Individuals at either 9:10 or 9:15, depending on actual number of entrants in Wave 1 and Wave 2.

2010 EDINBORO TRIATHLON
COURSE RULES and INFORMATION
SWIM COURSE
1. Swim caps are color-coded. You must wear the swim cap provided in your race bag.
2. Make sure you are in the correct wave at the start. Waves are designated by swim cap color. Olympic Distance Event: Yellow - male & female age 39 and younger, Daglo Orange -male & female age 40 and older, Daglo Green - Relay team swimmers. Sprint Distance Event: All individuals: Orange. All sprint relay teams: Pink.
3. All swimmers must pass through the swim start chute in single file to be individually counted before they enter the water for the start of the race. Being counted is absolutely essential for everyone.
4. Seed yourself within your wave according to your ability.
5. Keep to the left of all anchored pontoon boats. Pontoon boats should be on your right.
6. Call out your race number to a race official when exiting the water to help insure accounting for all swimmers.
7. Lifeguards and spotters will be monitoring the entire swim course.
8. Kayakers will be on the water provide on-course guidance and assistance to swimmers as needed.
9. If you drop out of the swim, it is vital that you report your race number... as soon as possible...to a race official at the Registration Site. This is of absolute importance so that there can be an accurate accounting of all swimmers.
Bike Course
1. Helmets that meet or exceed accredited safety standards are required. Helmets must be fastened before you get on your bike and must remained fastened until you are off your bike.
2. Bike number must be attached to the top tube of the bike and must be clearly visible.
3. When beginning the bike segment, you must walk or run your bike through the transition area until you reach the designated bike start point.
4. When completing the bike segment, you must dismount at the designated point before re-entering the transition area, then walk or run your bike back to your bike rack.
5. Drafting is not permitted at any time and will be monitored. Confirmed reports of drafting will result in a time penalty and possible disqualification.
6. All cyclists must ride on the far right hand side of the road...ride with traffic...at all times.
7. All turns are marked with large arrows painted on the road surface well in advance of each turn.
8. No assistance at anytime will be permitted on the bike course or in the transition area by anyone other than a race official.
9. Any bicycle placed improperly in the bike racks may result in disqualification of the athlete.
10. The bike course is not closed to traffic (with the exception of Lakeside Drive). Traffic is controlled but keep your head up, watch where you’re going and be prepared to stop.
11. If you see another athlete having serious difficulty, notify the next race volunteer or race official. (fire police / radio operator).
12. Although there is no official pre-race bike inspection, we reserve the right to disqualify any athlete found to have a faulty bicycle or equipment.
13. There are no bottle exchange or water stations on the bike course. Come prepared.
14. Headphones are NOT permitted.
RUN COURSE
1. Bib number must be worn on the front during the run.
2. Keep to the left-hand side (facing oncoming traffic) at all times, unless directed otherwise by fire police.
3. Follow large arrows painted on side of the road surface
4. Aid stations (water, ice,) will be located at the start of the run, at the 1, 1 ½ and 3 mile markers.
5. Headphones are NOT permitted.
6. Runners are advised that no friends/family members are permitted accompany you by car throughout the run course.
7. If you see another athlete having serious difficulty, notify the next race volunteer or race official.
8. Turn in your computer CHIP to the race officials immediately after you cross the finish line. Failure to turn in your CHIP will result in a charge of $35.00. No exceptions! This is every athlete’s responsibility.
SPECIAL RULES for TRIATHLON RELAY TEAMS
1. Triathlon team swimmers must hand off their team’s computer CHIP to their team cyclist who will be waiting in the designated team hand-off area.
2. All team cyclists must stay in the designated team hand-off area until handed their team’s CHIP by their triathlon team swimmer.
3. Cyclists must attach the CHIP to their ankle while still in the team hand-off area, before they get their bike.
4. Team cyclists must place their bike in their designated spot on the bike rack before handing off their team’s CHIP to their triathlon team runner.
5. All team runners must stay in the team hand-off area until they receive their team’s CHIP from the team cyclist.
6. All team runners must attach the CHIP to their ankle before they leave the team hand-off area.
7. All other rules for the swim course, bike course and run course must be followed. This includes the team runner turning in your team’s assigned CHIP at the finish line.
